There was an interesting article in The Toronto Star today by Carol Goar regarding birth rates around the world (http://bit.ly/1rfUDr). What I found particularly fascinating was re-discovering the seeming subtlety with which geography infringes on sociology – more specifically how those damned tectonic plates continue to have such a profound effect on the world in such an insidious fashion. I was surprised to find that Japan and South Korea have now become “western nations”. Perhaps I, like Sarah Palin, will soon be able to experience the thrill of seeing a foreign nation from my bedroom window, especially one which, until now, has always been classified as being part of the “Far East”. I guess if you go far enough east you do, indeed, end up in the west.
